WIG20 — What Is It?
The main indices of the Warsaw Stock Exchange, categorizing companies by size.
Explanation
WIG20 comprises the twenty largest and most liquid companies, mWIG40 the next forty medium-sized companies, and sWIG80 eighty smaller companies. Alongside them is WIG — a broad index covering almost the entire market.
This categorization can be confusing for new investors: WIG20 is heavily weighted towards the financial and fuel sectors, so its performance doesn't reflect the entire Polish economy.
Example
A company that grows for years in sWIG80 may be promoted to mWIG40 — such a promotion usually increases interest from funds, as some of them are required to hold index components.
