What Is a Stock Market Index?

An indicator showing the change in value of a basket of companies representing the market or a part of it.

Explanation

An index is not an instrument that can be bought—it is a measure. You can buy a fund that tracks it.

The composition of an index and the weighting method of its constituent companies are very important. A market-cap-weighted index is dominated by the largest companies, so the performance of a few firms can determine the behavior of the entire index.

Example

In the WIG20, a few of the largest companies account for a greater portion of the index's changes than the other dozen or so combined.
