What is a benchmark?
A benchmark against which you compare your portfolio's performance.
Explanation
Most often a stock market index—WIG, WIG20, or S&P 500—and for a Polish investor, also inflation. Without a reference point, "I earned 8%" means nothing: with the index up +20%, it's a poor result; with the index down −10%, it's a very good one.
Your benchmark should correspond to what you hold in your portfolio. Comparing a portfolio of Polish small-cap companies to a US technology index measures nothing.
Example
The portfolio earned 12%, while the WIG earned 18% during the same period. The result is positive, but worse than passively buying the broad market.
