TER — What Is It?
The annual cost of managing a fund, expressed as a percentage of the investment's value.
Explanation
You don't pay it separately — it's deducted from the fund's performance, so it can be invisible. That makes it even more important to check, because it's the only number in the entire statement that you know for sure in advance. No one knows future returns.
Over a long horizon, differences that seem minor become significant. The cost applies every year and to an increasingly larger capital base.
Example
Over 20 years with 7% annual returns, a fund costing 0.07% leaves about 12% more capital than an identical fund costing 0.45%.
