Rate of Return — What Is It?
The percentage change in the value of an investment over a given period.
Explanation
The simplest measure of performance, but it's easy to calculate incorrectly. Three common pitfalls: not accounting for contributions, omitting fees and taxes, and comparing periods of different lengths.
The rate of return is usually stated on an annualized basis to allow comparison with savings accounts, inflation, or an index. A +30% return over three years is less than 9% annually.
Example
A portfolio worth 50,000 PLN grew to 57,500 PLN without additional contributions. The rate of return is 15%.
