What is a drawdown?
The largest drop in portfolio value from peak to trough.
Explanation
The English term is drawdown. It's the best measure of how difficult a given strategy was to stick with, because experiencing a loss feels different from seeing an average annual return in a table.
Not only the size of the drawdown but also the time it takes to recover to the previous peak is important. A 50% drop requires a subsequent 100% gain to break even.
Example
A portfolio worth 100,000 PLN fell to 68,000 PLN before recovering. The maximum drawdown was 32%.
