What is Trading Volume?

The number of shares that changed hands during a given period.

Explanation

Volume indicates the actual level of trading activity. A large price movement on low volume is less significant than the same movement on high volume; in the former case, only a few orders were needed.

Volume spikes typically accompany earnings releases, company announcements, and a company's entry into or exit from an index.

Example

If a company typically trades 50 thousand shares daily but trades 900 thousand on its report day, it signals that the information was significant.
