Spread — What Is It?
The difference between the best bid and best ask price.
Explanation
This is the first, immediate cost of every transaction: you buy at a higher price and sell at a lower price. For liquid stocks, the spread is a fraction of a percent; for illiquid stocks, it can reach several percent.
The spread is a cost not visible in commission statements, but it is real—with frequent trading, it can exceed all brokerage fees combined.
Example
Buying at 10.20 PLN and simultaneously selling at 10.00 PLN means a spread of 2%—that's how much you lose the second you enter a position.
