What Is Earnings Surprise?

The percentage difference between a company's actual earnings and analysts' estimates.

Explanation

Also known as earnings surprise. A positive surprise means earnings were better than expected; a negative surprise means they were worse. This difference, rather than the absolute profit amount, explains most sharp share price movements after an earnings report is released.

It's important to look at a series of reports, not just a single quarter. A company that consistently beats forecasts usually communicates cautiously with the market. Analysts learn this and raise their expectations, so eventually, simply beating the forecast may no longer be enough.

Example

The forecast was 1.00 PLN per share, but the company reported 1.12 PLN. The surprise is +12%.
