CPI: What Is It?

A measure of inflation based on a basket of goods and services purchased by households.

Explanation

Published monthly, in Poland by the Central Statistical Office. It is reported on an annual basis (compared to the same month a year prior) and a monthly basis.

Alongside CPI, core inflation is also reported—excluding food and energy prices, which tend to fluctuate the most. Central banks primarily focus on core inflation as it better reflects the underlying price trend.

Example

A CPI reading of 3.8% against a forecast of 3.5% is an upside surprise—the market then shifts expectations regarding rate cuts.
