What to look for in earnings reports: Retail & Consumer Discretionary

In retail, comparable store sales are key — growth at stores open for over a year. A company might show rising revenue by opening new locations while losing customers at existing ones; this single metric separates those effects.

Seasonality is another factor. For many companies, the fourth quarter accounts for most of their annual profit, so comparing it to the third quarter is not useful. Comparisons are made year-over-year, and analyst forecasts in our calendar are calculated the same way.

  • Comparable store sales — filters out growth from new store openings.
  • Gross margin — falls when a company has to sell off inventory at a discount.
  • Inventory — inventory growing faster than sales signals markdowns in the next quarter.
